The Schwabe Pharma Group is a world leader in the research, development and production of herbal medicines. Our innovative medicines are effective, safe and well tolerated. Schwabe Pharma Belgium's range is further complemented by several topical products, a homeopathic range for newborns and eye drops.

Our roots

The history of Schwabe Pharma begins in 1866 with Dr. Willmar Schwabe. In that year, Dr. Schwabe founded a company in Leipzig, Germany, with the goal of unlocking the secrets of medicinal plants and manufacturing high-quality products from his knowledge. The company, named Schwabe, continued to grow and opened a branch in the Netherlands in 1910.

Meanwhile, the first homeopathic brand was launched by pharmacist Voorhoeve in the Netherlands.  The two companies continued to grow in parallel and eventually merged in 1965 under the name VSM (Voorhoeve Schwabe Merkgeneesmiddelen). The Belgian subsidiary, VSM Belgium, was founded in 1992.

To this day, the Schwabe company has been passed down from father to son. The fifth generation of the Schwabe family is currently at the head of the international family business. Over the years, the Schwabe Pharma Group has become a world leader in the development and production of herbal medicines.

The Schwabe Pharma Group is continuously building the international future of the company in a continuously changing and challenging global market.

This is the reason why VSM Belgium decided in 2018 to change its name to Schwabe Pharma Belgium. We are part of an international group that is the leader in the herbal medicine market and we are proud of that!

Our vision

At Schwabe Pharma we share a common vision: 'From Nature. For Health', where each of our employees believes in the use of natural ingredients, quality, effectiveness and safety.

Our goal is to bring value through innovation. The immense biodiversity of plants in the tropics and subtropics suggests an almost inexhaustible source of pharmaceutical materials. In close collaboration with local experts, we explore all avenues in plant research; we test the therapeutic action of newly identified medicinal plants through high quality screening systems. We are convinced that natural medicines will gain in importance in the coming decades. Herbal medicines can be extremely suitable for patients suffering from complex or age-related diseases.

As they influence several targets in the body at the same time, they have a different approach than the 'silver bullet' of synthetic drugs.
